"You're killing freedom and leading us to tyranny"
Try to cut a government program that's ineffective and the Left screams:
"You're killing people and leading us to anarchy"
The hyperbole from both sides is enough to drive you nuts. We all want to help our neighbors and make the world a better place, but we also want the freedom to pursue are dreams and passions. So what really works?
Our world has been experimenting for over 100 years to find the right balance between collective responsibility and individual freedom. During that time we've generated a lot of data.
So what does the data tells us?
The data shows that increasing GDP per Capita is the key to making the world a better place. Improving GDP per capita leads to increases in median family income, life expectancy and happiness. In short, increasing GDP per capita makes us healthier, wealthier and happier. That's the upside.
The data also shows that when GDP per capita shrinks, least capable among us suffer the most. That's the downside.
The data also shows that governments have a large effect on GDP per capita growth rates. For example, the size of the public sector, relatively to the private sector, has a huge impact on GDP growth. Likewise, the level of economic freedom, the rule of law, and government corruption all have large impacts on GDP growth.
Conclusion
Increasing GDP per Capita must be the cornerstone of any program to improve the lives of the members of our society.
